Companions,
Inc. is a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 1986. Our volunteers take their
family pets to visit at various sites in the Fairbanks community at least twice a month.
The visits are enjoyed by all involved, and the interaction between pet and resident
provides much needed therapy.
Our pet volunteers are not limited to
dogs & cats. We have/had horses, rabbits, hamsters, birds, reptiles,
etc. All of our animal volunteers must pass a temperament check, an annual physical exam
and a semi-annual fecal check. Our human volunteers must have an annual PPD test and
attend a volunteer orientation at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
We do not
require our human volunteers to have a pet in the program to participate. Companions, Inc.
welcomes members without pets to help promote community awareness of the importance of pet
therapy. Companions has no paid staff but relies on an energetic, committed group of over
50 volunteers.
