Breed and Purchasing Information

Before acquiring a dog of any breed the prospective owner should give careful consideration to what their expectations are of the dog and what they are willing to offer to the dog. Are you looking for a dog to show, to help with livestock, for protection, or companionship? Do you live in an apartment or on a farm? Do you have young children or several other pets? Are you willing to make a lifetime commitment to a dog?

Dogs should be purchased from a reputable breeder, or, in the case of older dogs, a reputable owner. A veterinarian of your choice should check the dog prior to purchase.

The well bred German Shepherd dog is a strong, agile, devoted working dog. They have filled many roles; police dog, seeing eye dog, search and rescue dog, herding dog, and arson dog, to name a few. Perhaps the most important role is that of best friend and faithful companion.

The temperament of the well bred German Shepherd is of prime importance. They are fearless, not aggressive, but willing to defend when necessary. They are self confident, quietly alert, and eager to please their human companions.

Well bred German Shepherds have dark eyes, ears that stand erect, dark noses, and are between 22"-24" at the shoulder. The ideal coat is straight, medium length, and of a strong rich color.

A common hereditary flaw found in German Shepherds, as well as most large breeds, is hip dysplasia. Before investing, financially and emotionally, in a German Shepherd be sure that the puppy's parents have been x-rayed and shown to have sound hips. In the case of an older dog insist that x-rays be performed on him.
